As I arrived in the USA and as the new semester is beginning I face the problem, that I don’t own an english bible. I know, that’s a shame, but that’s how it is. The one I had in Germany I left there, because it wasn’t one for theological studies, but rather for reading english as a beginner.
So now I am here and I need a good english Bible for my studies. Or maybe two bibles: One to work with for the studies (i.e.: making notes, underlining etc.), and one to use as my personal bible. I hope you understand, what I mean.
But my problem is: There are already plenty of german bibles, but there are even more of them in english. All this abbrevations: ESV,KJV,NIV,ASV etc. I have no idea which one to choose.
I am thinking about bying an ESV Study bible, although I have a german study bible and I use it really seldom. But maybe, it’s just because it’s a weak one. And the ESV SB seems really promising.
But apart from that I don’t know which one to choose. So I ask you, my dear friends and readers: What’s the english bible of your choise? Which one to choose for which purpose? And, very important: why?
Now it’s your turn. I would prefer, if you would answer in english, because this post is in english, but german or polish would be fine, too

I left my English Bible in Kenya…
And I love “The Message”, but I think thats not the best Bible for studying…

NASB for studies (it’s the most accurate one and everybody agrees on that…maybe the english elberfelder :P)
if you want one that is more readable than try the ESV.

Sorry, der Kommentar kommt bisschen spät, aber ich wollte doch noch schnell die NIV Study Bible empfehlen (ich hab die “Compact Study Bible”). Hat mir immer treue Dienste geleistet. Die Übersetzung is so ein Zwischending aus wörtlich und kommunikativ - liest sich auf jeden Fall sehr gut und ist exegetisch zuverlässig. Die Kommentare sind auch ganz hilfreich, ebenso die kurzen Einführungen in die Bücher. Außerdem gibts sehr schöne Grafiken, Tabellen etc. und am Ende sogar ne Konkordanz, mit der man doch so einiges findet.

hey karl! I prefer the New King James Version. I think this version is near to the greek text but still comprehensible for non-native-americans…
p.s.: Werd jetzt häufiger mal deinen block lesen um viel von deinen erfahrungen mitzukriegen.

Maybe it should be mentioned that the New King James is based on the Textus Receptus…
